Renting a Tuxedo Versus Buying a Tuxedo
Should I rent a tuxedo or buy a tuxedo?
There are several occasions to wear a tuxedo… prom, weddings, and black tie dinners are just to name a few. I think it is always a good idea to have at least one or two formal pieces to wear in case you are invited to a wedding or nice dinner party. The most important thing you need to do is evaluate whether you need a tuxedo for several different occasions. If it is your prom I would suggest on renting because you probably will not be going to any black tie events after graduation, but you never know.
If you plan on attending more then four black tie events in a year then you will be saving money by buying your tuxedo compared to renting. There are several types of styles to consider when purchasing. Get an idea of with style you want by searching online catalogs and magazines. The right measurements are very important in getting a tuxedo which fits properly.
How to measure for a tuxedo
Chest – Measure chest just under arms and across shoulder blades. Blazer sizes are equal to your chest size.
Waist – Keep one finger between tape and your body. Measure a little below your natural waist
Neck – Measure around fullest part of your neck, keeping the measuring tape level.
Arms – Relax arm at side and slight bend elbow. Measure from the center back of neck, over point of shoulder, and down outside of arm past elbow to wrist.
You can also go into a tuxedo specialty shop and have them take your measurements. Do your research! There are countless of online sites and each of these companies probably have folks who have reviewed them. Also research each companies return policy, especially if you are going to by a suit for an online store. You local store may have the ideal tux you are looking for, take your time and you will find one right for you.
